Main walkway

Any path people use daily

Two people pass at 42 in; one person needs 30 in. Below 24 in a room feels blocked.

14–18 in

Sofa to coffee table

Close enough to reach a drink

Under 12 in your knees hit it. Over 20 in you have to stand up to reach it.

24 in

Beside a bed

Minimum on the side you get out

30 in is comfortable. In a tight room, give one side 30 in rather than both sides 20 in.

36 in

Behind a dining chair

To pull out and sit down

44 in if someone needs to walk behind a seated guest.
