10x10 Kitchen Layout: Galley, L-Shape or U-Shape?

A 10x10 kitchen is 120 inches square, and the number that decides everything is 70: what is left of the width once 25-inch counters go on two facing walls. Seventy inches is a generous aisle and a useless island, because a 24-inch island dropped into it leaves 23 inches on each side and the requirement is 42. The 10x10 is also the industry's pricing benchmark - when a cabinet showroom quotes "a 10x10 kitchen" they mean an L of roughly 20 linear feet - so this footprint is the one to price against.

What fits in 10×10 ft

Works

  • Counters on three walls with a 70 x 95 in interior. Two facing 25 in runs leave 70 in, which is 28 in past the 42 in minimum.
  • Around 26 linear feet of base cabinet in the U-shape - the reason the trade prices cabinets by "a 10x10 kitchen".
  • A 36 in wide standard-depth refrigerator anywhere in a run, because 70 in of aisle absorbs its 11 in of projection and still leaves 59 in.
  • A 36 x 24 in rolling prep cart in the L-shape plan, parked 42 in off both runs and pushed aside when it is in the way.
  • A 12 in deep floor-to-ceiling pantry wall across one end, adding roughly 10 linear feet of storage for 12 in of room length.

Does not fit

  • A fixed island. 25 in of counter + 42 in of aisle + 24 in of island + 36 in of walkway is 127 in, and every wall here is 120 in.
  • A peninsula with seating that stays inside the room. A 12 in overhang plus a 21 in stool plus a 32 in pass-behind needs 65 in beyond the counter run, and 95 in of clear length cannot hold that and a work aisle both.
  • A 48 in range with proper landing. 48 + 15 + 12 is 75 in of a 120 in wall, which leaves nothing for the sink run beside it.
  • A dining table for four. A 42 in round table needs 36 in of chair pull-out on all sides - 114 in clear - and the largest clear span here is 95 in.
  • Double wall ovens plus a separate cooktop. The oven stack is 30 in wide and 27 in deep and eats a full run without adding a burner.

Best for A single cook who wants every square inch working and no wasted aisle

U-Shape with the Sink on the Window Wall

Runs wrap three walls, leaving an interior of 70 by 95 inches. The far wall carries a 24-inch counter, the dishwasher, a 36-inch sink base and 36 inches of clear landing; the range sits 20 inches down the left run and the refrigerator closes the right run beside the doorway. Legs measure 6.0 ft sink to range, 8.2 ft range to fridge and 8.0 ft fridge to sink - 22.2 ft in total, which is inside the 26 ft ceiling but near the top of it, and you feel that in the walking. The fix, if you cook a lot, is to move the fridge up the right run so the range-to-fridge leg drops under 7 feet, at the cost of putting the fridge door into the entry path.

Strengths

  • A 70-inch interior, which is 28 inches past the working minimum and enough for two people to pass
  • Around 26 linear feet of base cabinet, the most of any 10x10 plan
  • The dishwasher sits directly beside the sink with 24 inches of counter on its far side

Tradeoffs

  • A 22.2 ft work triangle, near the top of the 13 to 26 ft band
  • Two blind corners that need corner fittings to be reachable
  • Seventy inches of aisle is more than one cook needs and cannot become an island

BetweenMinimumWhy
Between two facing counter runs42 in minimum, 48 in for two cooks, 70 in hereForty-two is one body and one open door. Forty-eight lets a second person pass behind the first without contact.
Around an island, on every working side42 inThis is the rule that kills the island in a 10 ft room: 42 + 24 + 42 is 108 in of aisle and island alone, before any counter run.
Each leg of the work triangle48 to 108 in (4 to 9 ft)Under 4 ft the two appliances crowd each other and you cannot open both doors. Over 9 ft you are walking, not cooking.
Total work triangle156 to 312 in (13 to 26 ft)The U-shape here totals 22.2 ft and the L-shape 16.5 ft. Both are legal; the L is the one that feels quick.
In front of an open dishwasher42 in from the cabinet faceThe door drops to 24 in and you stand behind it to load. Twenty-four plus body depth is 42.
Refrigerator door swing36 in clear arc, hinge side against nothingA fridge in a corner with the hinge against a return run cannot open past 90 degrees, and the crisper drawers will not clear.

Mistakes people make in this size room

  • Assuming a 10x10 takes an island because the room "feels square enough". The arithmetic is 127 inches needed against 120 available, and it fails by more than half a foot.
  • Ordering a corner base cabinet with a plain door instead of a lazy Susan or a corner pull-out. In a U-shape you have two of them, which is 8 cubic feet you will never reach.
  • Putting the refrigerator in the inside corner of the L with its hinge against the return. The door stops at 90 degrees and the drawers jam behind it.
  • Spreading the appliances evenly around a U for symmetry. The range-to-fridge leg goes over 9 feet and you notice it on every meal.
  • Filling the 70-inch aisle with a butcher block on legs and calling it an island. Fixed at 23 inches per side it is a code problem; on castors it is furniture, and that is the honest way to do it.

Questions about this room size

Can you put an island in a 10x10 kitchen?

No. An island needs 42 inches of aisle on every working side, so the smallest workable chain is a 25-inch counter run, 42 inches of aisle, a 24-inch island and a 36-inch walkway - 127 inches. A 10-foot wall gives you 120.

What does a 10x10 kitchen mean in cabinet pricing?

It is the trade's benchmark quote, not a real room description. A "10x10 kitchen" price covers roughly 20 linear feet of stock cabinets in an L arrangement - about 12 base and 12 wall units - so you can compare two showrooms on the same list.

What is the best layout for a 10x10 kitchen?

A U-shape for storage, an L-shape for cooking. The U gives about 26 linear feet of base cabinet with a 22.2 ft work triangle; the L gives about 15 linear feet with a 16.5 ft triangle and keeps two walls open.

How wide is the aisle in a 10x10 galley kitchen?

70 inches, once 25-inch counters go on both facing walls. That is wider than a galley needs - 42 is the minimum and 48 lets two people pass - so a 10-foot-wide galley trades efficiency for elbow room.

Where should the sink go in a 10x10 kitchen?

On the window wall if there is one, with 24 inches of counter on one side and 18 on the other. The dishwasher goes immediately beside it on your non-dominant side, because its own countertop counts as landing space on that side.

How many linear feet of counter does a 10x10 kitchen have?

About 26 linear feet of base cabinet in a U-shape and 15 in an L. Subtract the appliances - 30 inches for the range, 24 for the dishwasher, 36 for the sink base - and the U leaves roughly 18 feet of true working surface.
