Kitchen Tips

Optimize your kitchen workflow with efficient layouts that make cooking and entertaining effortless.

Ideal Size

10×10 ft (100 sq ft)

Must-Have Furniture

Counters, Stove, Fridge

Common Layouts

Galley, L-Shape, U-Shape

Follow the work triangle

Position the sink, stove, and refrigerator in a triangle with 4-9 feet between each. This minimizes steps while cooking.

KitchenLayout

Keep counters clutter-free

Store appliances you use less than weekly. Clear counters make cooking easier and the kitchen feel larger.

KitchenOptimization

Use cabinet organizers

Pull-out shelves, lazy susans, and door-mounted racks can double your usable cabinet space.

KitchenFurniture

Don't block the workflow

Island placement that blocks the path between sink and stove creates frustration. Ensure 42-48 inches of clearance around islands.

KitchenCommon Mistakes

Add task lighting under cabinets

Under-cabinet LED strips illuminate countertops for food prep and add ambient warmth.

KitchenOptimization

Galley kitchen efficiency

In narrow kitchens, place the most-used items at waist height. Use wall-mounted pot racks and magnetic knife strips.

KitchenLayout

Open shelving for small kitchens

Replace upper cabinets with open shelves to reduce visual weight and make the kitchen feel more open.

KitchenFurniture

Don't forget the landing zone

Always have at least 15 inches of counter space on each side of the stove and sink for placing items.

KitchenCommon Mistakes

Plan by zones, not just the triangle

Group the kitchen into four stations: store, prep, cook, and clean, each with at least 24 inches of dedicated counter. Zones scale to islands and galley runs where a strict triangle breaks down, and they tell you exactly which drawer a tool belongs in.

KitchenLayout

Hang the dishwasher on your dominant side of the sink

The door drops 21 inches into the aisle and the racks pull another 20, so a dishwasher opposite your loading hand means walking around it every plate. Keep the appliance within 36 inches of the sink bowl and on the side you naturally scrape toward.

KitchenCommon Mistakes

Give the refrigerator its swing and its air

A 30 to 36-inch fridge needs about 1 inch of clearance at the sides and top for airflow and a full 36 inches of floor in front for the door plus a person. Put 15 inches of landing counter on the handle side so groceries have somewhere to go.

KitchenFurniture

Only add an island above 13 feet of width

Do the arithmetic: 25-inch counter, 42-inch aisle, a 24 to 36-inch island, another 42-inch aisle, and a 25-inch counter comes to roughly 158 inches. Below that, a 24x48 rolling cart or a peninsula gives you the same prep surface without choking the room.

KitchenLayout

Respect the gap between counter and uppers

Standard counters sit 36 inches high with wall cabinets 18 inches above them, giving you a 25-inch deep work surface with headroom for a stand mixer. Over a range that gap jumps to 30 inches minimum for a hood, so never carry the cabinet line straight across.

KitchenOptimization

Watch the inside corner where two doors meet

Two cabinet doors on an inside corner will collide unless you add a 3-inch filler strip, and drawers next to a corner need the same setback to clear the pull. Check this on paper before ordering, because it is not fixable after installation.

KitchenCommon Mistakes

Budget 24 inches of counter per stool

Each seat needs 24 inches of width and 15 inches of knee depth at a 36-inch counter, or 12 inches of knee depth at a 42-inch bar. A 6-foot island therefore seats three people comfortably, not four, and needs 44 inches behind the stools to walk past.

KitchenLayout

Empty the shelf above 72 inches

Anything higher than about 6 feet requires a step stool, so it should hold holiday platters and nothing you touch weekly. Keep daily dishes and pans between 22 and 56 inches off the floor, the band you can reach without shifting your feet.

KitchenOptimization

Do not hang pendants into the sightline

The bottom of a pendant belongs 30 to 36 inches above the counter, which is about 66 to 72 inches off the floor, high enough to see the person across the island. Space one fixture per 24 to 30 inches of island length and center them on the cabinet run, not the room.

KitchenCommon Mistakes

Add a rolling cart in kitchens under 70 square feet

An 18x30 butcher-block cart adds nearly 4 square feet of prep surface and rolls out of the aisle when you need the 42 inches back. Choose one with locking casters and park it against the wall opposite the range.

Kitchen questions, answered

The questions people ask most about this room, with the number first.

How wide should the aisle between kitchen counters be?

Forty-two inches for one cook and 48 inches when two people work at once, measured counter face to counter face or counter to island. Under 36 inches you cannot open a dishwasher or an oven door and still pass behind it, which is the failure most galley remodels run into.

How much counter space do you need next to the stove?

Fifteen inches on one side and 12 on the other as an absolute minimum, with 18 to 24 inches preferred on the landing side. That is where a hot pan goes the second it comes off the burner. The same 15-inch rule applies beside the refrigerator handle and under a microwave.

What size kitchen island fits my kitchen?

Your kitchen needs roughly 14 feet wall to wall before an island earns its place: 25-inch counters on both sides, 42-inch aisles, and a 40-inch-deep island total 174 inches. Under that, a peninsula or a rolling cart gives you the work surface without strangling the walkway.

How deep are kitchen countertops?

Twenty-five inches deep over a 24-inch base cabinet, with the extra inch as overhang. Counter height is 36 inches and upper cabinets hang 18 inches above the surface. Islands often run 36 to 42 inches deep so one side can carry a 12 to 15 inch seating overhang.

How much space do you need in front of a dishwasher?

Allow 42 inches from the cabinet face for a fully open door plus room to stand and load. The door alone drops about 24 inches into the aisle. In a galley tighter than 42 inches, plan the layout so the dishwasher opens toward the sink end rather than the through-traffic end.

How wide is a standard refrigerator?

Standard refrigerators are 30 to 36 inches wide, 30 to 34 inches deep with the doors, and 66 to 70 inches tall. Add an inch of air on each side and at the top. Check the swing too: a French-door model wants about 36 inches of clear floor to pull the crisper out.

Does the kitchen work triangle still matter?

Keep each leg between the sink, stove and refrigerator at 4 to 9 feet, with the three sides totaling 13 to 26 feet. Kitchens built for two cooks often work better as zones, but the triangle still catches the classic error of a refrigerator stranded across the room from the prep counter.

How far apart should pendant lights hang over an island?

Space pendants 30 to 32 inches apart on center and hang the bottoms 30 to 36 inches above the counter. Two pendants suit an island up to 7 feet, three suit 8 feet and over. Keep the outer fixtures at least 6 inches inside the island ends so heads never meet glass.

Can you fit a table in a small kitchen?

A 30-inch round table fits anywhere you can find 84 inches in one direction, which is the table plus 36 inches of chair pull-out on two sides. Drop-leaf and 24-inch-deep bar-height tables work in less. Wall-side bench seating saves a foot over chairs because it never pulls out.
